Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

5.0

Deonn's debut novel totally took me by surprise! I had read many reviews attesting to the excellence of this novel and was completely drawn in by the publisher's description, but wow, I was not expecting Legendborn to deliver quite so much of a punch.
This story is a whirlwind of the weirdest mashup of themes - Aurtherian legend, campus life, YA romance, magical bloodlines, good vs evil, lingering effects of slavery, domestic mystery - only someone brilliant could have melded them together so artfully into this comprehensive narrative. We don't need Hollywood remaking Buffy when Legendborn is lined up to be the next big progressive series about demon-slaying teenagers.
I'll grant that the story took some time to ramp up due to Deonn having to lay the groundwork with so much lore. At times it could feel as if the narrative was put on hold in order to provide a massive info dump, but good grief, the payoff was incredible.
I'll be one of the first to jump on the new installment as soon as it hits the shelves!
