Falling Angel
by William Hjortsberg
This book was a ride. The confidently descriptive and briskly paced writing hooked me right away as the story starts off as a your standard noir detective tale that's so cliché that they were parodying it in cartoons I grew up with in the 1990s.
Then it starts throwing in some voodoo flavor which was fun before dipping into full-on Satanic nonsense (seems to predate the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, one of the many things you can read up on that if you ever start to think too fondly of human beings) which had me rolling my eyes before we descended fully into the Horror genre. It pulls off its tricky ending.
