The Laughing Dead by Jess Lourey

dark mysterious tense fast-paced

4.0

When Van's ID is found at a crime scene, she is pulled back into a forgotten cold case that happened in 1984 named The Laughing Dead killings because of the gruesome smile left on the victims faces. As time goes on, Van's past is slowly creeping back in to haunt/harm her.

This was a creepy yet fascinating read. Van is still such an interesting character to me. Her past is chilling (and her secret... very chilling!). The place and way she grew up and her special ability. Harry, though not knowing her biggest secret, is a great partner for her. I didn't get a chance to read book 2 yet so I don't understand some of the tension between the two in this book, but I felt satisfied anyway (after all they go through in this) at the end with how it left off.
