"There's a dark well in everyone, I think, and it never goes dry. But you drink from it at your peril. That water is poison."

If anyone was expecting this to be a traditional King novel, they'd be both wrong and right. It kept the fairly simple syntax and rapid resolution of conflict. However, this was absolutely the slowest book I've ever read by him. The main plot didn't even kick off until nearly 180 pages in. I think he was attempting to tell a much more human story of how sometimes we build the most meaningful connections of our lives in very unexpected places. It got a little too heavy on the plot hints for me, King uses fairly transparent foreshadowing. I also thought this would have been more entertaining had he reduced the amount of times he pointed out connections to actual fairy tales.

I got really bored with the repetition of how the main character realized he was speaking in a different language and pointing it out to himself and the reader.

One special moment to me was when the other inmates stepped forward and Pursey's loyalty because of simple kindness. I also loved the chapter illustrations!
