Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon

4.0

3.75. My quest to read all Jennifer McMahon’s works continues. This was her debut and if I had read it in 2007, I think it would have been just about a five star read. Like all her works, both timelines are engaging and she creates characters to root for as you wind through her twists and turns. Where I think this entry falls a bit short is the balance between a realistic serial killer thriller and a ghost story. What I’ve come to love about McMahon is the heart in her stories and the crafty balance of genres. This falls more into the thriller aspect which means it needs to nail the plot. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of hand waving around some plot holes at the end. The ghost story, and the central relationship between the main character and said ghost, should have been the heart of the thing, but falls short of its potential. Still a worthy starting point for anyone getting into McMahon’s works.
