Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts

emotional informative reflective sad tense

3.5

Decent fictional imagining of the life of Maud Gage Baum, wife of L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz books. I'd much rather read a straight biography, though, because I'm annoyed by wondering what was true and what was speculation. It was fascinating to learn about the existence of Maud's sister and her family, which likely inspired the desperate situation of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry in the book, and of their "Dorothy," but the connection with the Dorothy of Oz seemed a bit overblown and sentimental.

The shoehorning in of information about both the origin of Oz and the making of the MGM film was not badly done, but still a bit contrived for my taste. Again, I'd rather be reading nonfiction.

In any case, Maud was an amazing woman and deserves multiple books to be written about her.
