Divine Rivals

3/5 ⭐️
The story is about Iris Winnow, an 18 y.o. journalist who misses her older brother who's fighting in a war on behalf of the Gods, while taking care of her mother who's drowning in sorrow, and competing for a promotion against a boy named Roman Kitt.
I picked this book knowing it was YA, as I wanted some romance without smut. Unfortunately though for me, the characters felt a bit young, the story moved a bit slow and the fantasy part of the book didn't quite come through.
The biggest let down was that my expectations were not managed properly. I would've been better prepared if I knew it was going to a historical fiction romance with just a touch of magic. There's always a time and place for cosy, slower paced books but I needed to know that's what I was picking up beforehand.
Book 2 seemed like it involves more magic, so I'd be interested to see where the story goes from here!
