SPOILERS AHEAD
This book is probably, so far, of the 16 books from R A Salvatore that compose the story (the 11 Drizzt books and the 5 Cadderly books), the one I expected the least from, and the one I enjoyed the most.
I still have a long way ahead of me in learning about the full history of Drizzt, its collection getting close to 40 books (and believe me, I will read them all). I like the change of tone, a lot. I like that the gruesome violence is described and shown: this world is not as heroic and pretty as we used to think, and killing will always take a toll.
I also found myself rooting for Artemis on his way up the chain to Pascha of the Basadonis. Brilliant execution. I felt Jarlaxle was oftentimes the deus-ex element that guaranteed everything would be fine in the end (including the book's epilogue). His motivations aren't as clear to him as he thinks and, based on this book, I am pretty sure he will eventually become somewhat good, or at least, a resource the good characters can use.
I give this book five stars, and am already trying hard to not start reading the next one. Life has its quests for me as well, so it's gonna be a few days before I return to this world. I can hardly wait.
