Cold Fire
by Kate Elliott
MY EMOTIONS, MY EMOTIONS!
I felt like the previous book was a slow starter, in part because the world-building and the setup was so intricate, which I appreciate, but it took me longer than I would have liked to really get into it. The beginning of Cold Fire felt the same, but it achieved the "oh, shit is getting REAL" factor much more quickly than Cold Magic, and as a result I felt much more engaged in the story. I don't think it's a BETTER book, but I think I've now had time to know the characters and care for them and start to see how the pieces fall together. And, it cannot be said enough, I so appreciate these books for having so many women in power and so many characters of color, including but not limited to ALL of the three main characters.
Of course, what I really want to be doing is running around in circles going BUT CAT AND VAI, THOUGH. *FLAPPY HANDS*
