Wow. Just wow! This is the first adult sci-fi/fantasy book I have read. I don’t know if this book speaks for the whole genre, but I will be finishing this series!

The narrative structure is incredible (second person for some of the chapters) and multiple POVs. The detail is unimaginably specific and thorough and connected to the smallest piece throughout the book. I am beyond impressed with Jemisin’s writing and storytelling abilities.

I was also so pleased to see black characters at the center of this novel. Different skin tones and gender identities were a normal part of the narration not an added afterthought. That kind of inclusion is exactly what we should see in every book. I can not recommend this highly enough.
