Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

4.0

I appreciated that this story - while dark, violent, and creepy enough to satiate my appetite for horror - wasn’t dark and depressing for the sake of being so. It ends on a hopeful and satisfying note without an overload of epilogue exposition, tying up loose ends in a way that feels very natural. Admittedly, I wasn’t truly drawn into the book until about halfway through, but the characters are unique and interesting enough to make it worth getting through the slow rising action.
