Layoverland by Gabby Noone

Seriously not sure on the rating for this. In the first quarter/third of the book I thought it could be a five, then later on, in some parts, I felt like it'd be a three. So I'm just gonna go for the middle of the two for now.

I thought it was a fun, very quick read. It really didn't feel long at all, I loved the short chapters, the story was simple but entertained me. I liked the MC in all her bitchiness, chip on the shoulder-ness, selfishness, and blame deflecting-ness. The love story was meh, but didn't bother me. It was just a bit difficult to understand why Caleb liked her so much when she was such a prickly ass most of the time. But it was effective for where the characters had to go.

I guess for all the breezy fun of it, in the end it just didn't feel "deep" enough. And this is totally a personal preference, but it had just too many very current pop culture references. I mean, I understood them all (yes, even the reference to a fucking tumblr post about liminal spaces), but there's always a part of me that's like... this will feel dated so fast. And really, who cares? Who says books have to withstand time? But it still distracts me. And occasionally characters did sound stilted and weird like they were spouting social media posts rather than expressing the same thoughts/opinions like people would talk more irl (on the other hand, I have heard people sound like that irl so... maybe I'm just off).

But anyway, I think this book would be more of a solid three at any other time for me, but this is quarantine time, and a breezy, easy, fun read about the afterlife and finding love and forgiveness in liminal spaces is what I needed. I actually always wanted to go back to it and read more, so that's a major point in its favour too. :D
