Funny Story by Emily Henry

5.0

I feel like Emily Henry always swings for the fences and always, always knocks it out of the park. Even when I'm not aware of what the book is about, I know I'll get that signature Henry wit that makes me want to be her best friend.

What the hell do you do when your fiance, the man you literally built your life around, dumps you the night of his bachelor party for the platonic female best friend he swore he never thought of any other way?! I'd freak the hell out, but Daphne moves in with the platonic female friend's ex boyfriend, Miles, who also got brutally dumped. Miles is a sad sack during the break up, listening to the most depressing songs ever, which totally throws Daphne for a loop because somehow he's also the friendliest guy, who everyone seems to genuinely adore. The two sort of pretend to be together to get back at their exes, but of course feelings develop. But also, Daphne gets her chance to live her life her way and make friends with women outside of a relationship. Small talk is hard, but Daphne comes a long way. At 33, can she get over her ex, move on on her own, have a successful relationship and career, and make friends?!

The one common theme I kept picking up on was how many women give so much of themselves over when they become partners, mothers, etc. Daphne devoted everything to Peter only to come up shorthanded. Ashleigh became a mom and threw herself fully in only to be single when he got older because she and her ex had nothing to talk about. Hell, even Miles gave so much of himself to his sister Julia so hopefully she had a better childhood with their parents than he did. At the end of the day, nothing changes there and we all sacrifice for the people we love. You just hope you luck out and the people around you will sacrifice for you too.
