Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

5.0

“Love is too small, too singular a word for the feeling it’s trying to hold. Just one word isn’t enough, so I want to use them all. Sometimes I think love is the reason language was invented.” ~ Nicola Yoon

I’m a mess. I just finished read #InstructionsForDancing and I don’t think I’ve cried this much in a while. I also finished this book in a day which says a lot given my reading rut.

Evie is a teen who no longer believes in love after she catches her dad cheating. A once true blue contemporary romance book lover, she gives away all her romance novels to a library. What she receives in return is a supernatural sight to forsee how a couple’s love story play out. This gift strengthens her belief that love only leads to heartbreak. But then she meets X, a handsome young boy who is kind at heart and also gives her all the feels…

I do not think I can do justice by writing a review for this gem of a book, especially because I finished reading it only about ten minutes ago. I’m still going to try and convince you to pick it up asap.

This book has got everything- romance, representation, friendship, family dynamics, that magic dust, effortless writing, dancing, and great character development. It is not just a regular romance novel for it addresses many deep emotions- forgiveness, grief, and heartbreak in particular. There are many fun jabs at contemporary romance trope and you’d most definitely love all the banter.

There are many lines in the book that I have loved. But the one true message that the book gives reiterates the fact that one should live in the present, enjoy the moment, and cherish and treasure the memories.

If you’re an ugly crier like me, keep a box of tissues next to you. Thank you, @nicolayoon for this book. I wanted to hold the book tight when I finished reading it. Reading the acknowledgment was sadder.

We need more diverse love stories and I’d give this book 5 Shining stars. It’s going to stay with me for a long time.
