The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
5.0

As I started to read this book I felt myself wondering if this was the book for me. Was it a bit artsy and undirected? Initially I was a bit lost and unable to ground myself in the story but I persisted and I am so glad that I did. Once I had sorted out the characters and understood the slightly unconventional style of the book I was fully immersed in the wonderful prose. There are sentences and paragraphs that took my breath away. The characters were fallible and imperfect and I identified with so much of their angst and their obsessions and their yearning for love. The themes of loss and love are so beautifully explored. It is a magical and haunting book that manages to explore deep sadness yet leaves you feeling that all our journeys through life and loss are not unique but simply the human condition.
