What Happened To You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce D. Perry, Oprah Winfrey

5.0

This is easily one of the most rewarding nonfiction books I have read so far. Even if you did not have any adverse experiences in your childhood, it still teaches you about resilience, emotional development, how the brain processes information, and above all what has always helped humans heal.

The book itself has ten chapters, each of them prefaced by a short story or anecdote by one of the authors. The chapters themselves are indeed written as a conversation between Perry and Winfrey so that they almost appear like long interviews. I do not think I have ever seen the topic of trauma handled with such care and empathy and understanding; still, this book is highly informative and unlike other medical nonfiction the graphics are actually employed in a way that contributes to the text.

I don't recommend reading this in one go. I do recommend reading it more than once, though, because that's what I see myself doing. I'm looking forward to reading "The Child Who Was Raised as a Dog" by Perry.
