Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-joo

4.0

There's this movie on Netflix that's all the rage recently. I think its called The Social Dilemma. Its a docu-drama. Part fiction and part non-fiction. Its a story that gets makes viewers shudder or nod in agreement because its carried forward by fictional protagonists, but is supported by actual facts.

This book - Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, is exactly that. I don't know if we have a category for books like these. Although the book is based on fictional characters, all the events that are mentioned, that Jiyoung and the other women in her life go through in Korea, are based on actual facts, referenced from real life data, mentioned throughout the book.

I am also born in the year 1982, and this book resonated with me on so many levels, that its hard to explain. I'm currently a working mother too and I was stunned to read that Korean working women went through and are going through the same kind of struggles and constant subtle discrimination, as Indian women do. As my friends, mothers and I have been and going through.

Things are getting better, but the fight is far from over. If you're a feminist, and believe in equality, please read this book. If you're not a feminist, please read this book nevertheless, to be informed about the struggles women go through, and the fact that its a global issue.
