The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
5.0

Plots behind plots, plans beyond plans. There was always another secret.

Holds up just as well upon re-read - what an absolutely fabulous book! It works on so many levels, but my favorite aspects are the heist plots and the found family in Kelsier’s crew. Watching Vin slowly open up to people is so heartwarming (and heartbreaking as tragedy comes) and I’m so excited for her journey to come in the next two books. It’s also amazing as an epic fantasy - I found the magic system and world fairly easy to understand, and he does a good job of peppering in explanations and reminders so you’re never left totally dumbfounded, unless you’re meant to be.
I see this as an interesting companion to the Six of Crows duology - fans of one should try the other, knowing they’re not entirely alike, but there’s enough overlap that those who enjoy the found family heisting crew within a larger magical system and corrupt government in one book will enjoy the same themes in the other.
