And Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov

5.0

Next level writing. In my opinion on par with Tolstoy. The author disappears behind his characters and settings. It is as if I can see and hear the Don rushing by. I’ve never observed the use of all 5 senses better than I’m this book.
I was taken for a ride as I read the book. By far one of my favorite Russian classics.
I didn’t know anything about Cossacks or their culture before reading. The perspectives of the characters offer unique insights into the First World War.
The raw, fiery, human emotions were refreshing. From the deepest love to the most vicious hatred. Well done.
