The Price of Salt, or Carol
by Patricia Highsmith
I listened to the audiobook version of The Price of Salt, and I wasn't disappointed I had. A lush reading of a lush story. I was surprised that this was the work of a "pulp novelist". Exquisite detail and a surprising level of depth and introspection. The story dips its toes into issues of class and youth, but its strongest aspect is its same-sex love story with its intimate knowledge and portrayal of so many of the obstacles such love faces yet today.
