Grasses of a Thousand Colors by Wallace Shawn

3.0

The play's composed of huge monologues and takes place half on screen. I'm fascinated with the way Shawn has his characters describing the action - as an actor, how can you be a sportscaster for your character's life and still live it on stage? But this play is so fantastical that the subject matter really takes over - it's a sci-fi fantastical fairytale mixed with a particularly fascinating episode of Cheaters. It's all about sex and affairs, but to give it a scholastic label, let's say it's about appetite - sexual, gastronomic, and even an appetite for love and our own bodies. It's like nothing I've read before.
