Steadfast
by Sarina Bowen
Totally awesome four and a half stars!
We first met Jude Nickel in [b:Bittersweet|28161530|Bittersweet (True North, #1)|Sarina Bowen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1461251916s/28161530.jpg|48174412], having just left prison he worked for several months on Griff's farm. Jude is a recovering drug addict who was imprisoned for killing his girlfriend's brother whilst driving under the influence.
Apple picking season is over and Jude returns to his home town of Colebury, Vermont. With a criminal record and as a recovering addict Jude knows he will find it difficult to get a job so he returns to work in his father's garage, Nickel Auto Body. Still plagued by the desire for drugs Jude struggles to cope with the drudgery of everyday life. All that keeps him sane are the weekly dinners with the Shipleys and his NA meetings. Then a chance good deed for the local priest brings Jude back into contact with Sophie.
Sophie is Jude's ex-girlfriend and the daughter of the Police Chief. She had to give up her plans for Julliard and New York after her brother's death. her mother walks around the house like a zombie and seems incapable of lifting a finger and her father is a chauvinist with a temper. She spends her days working as a social worker at the local hospital, studying for her exams and looking after the family home - not what she expected her life would be like three years ago.
I read on Sarina's newsletter that people tried to persuade her not to write a book about an ex-con who is a recovering addict. Can I just say they were SO wrong. This book was just wonderful, easily as good as any of the other books by Sarina. Jude was just such a great guy and Sophie was a worthy girlfriend.
Recommended for anyone who loves a good girl/ bad boy romance, a second chance romance, Sarina Bowen novels, hot guys with tats, small town mysteries - pretty much anyone frankly.
Can not wait for the next one.
