My Favourite in the Trilogy but...

Of the three books in this trilogy, this one is probably my favourite. It’s rom-com adjacent, laugh out loud funny. Kiera is truly the everywoman heroine of this trilogy because reading this series it’s almost as if every single person is involved and knowledgeable about the lifestyle. Kiera is actually clueless, filled with misconceptions and not even curious at the beginning like most people are. Therefore, this was a good opportunity for her and for many of us readers to learn about the contexts of the BDSM lifestyle.

The premise is that Kiera is a cosplaying, sci-fi show-loving fangirl with extra dashes of nerdiness who hangs out at a sci-fi show convention with Daniel, where they hit it off and falls in love. The only issue, Daniel is heavily into the BDSM lifestyle and Kiera is incredibly vanilla and not even curious. Can Daniel truly separate his lifestyle from his love or will keeping secrets make them crash and burn?

HOWEVER, I kind of felt like Kiera was sort of indirectly pressured to be more involved and more adaptable to the lifestyle. I was a little uncomfortable with this aspect of the book and with identifying how much of Kiera’s involvement was her actual preference and how much was a result of her wanting to hold on to the one guy interested in her. I mean I can also see the positive spin of this that this is a book of awakening for Kiera but I personally read it the opposite way and was somewhat uncomfortable with this narrative of Kiera’s development in the lifestyle.
