The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
3.0
Maybe 3.5 stars? I enjoyed the author’s voice, but I didn’t love it, and as with a lot of supposed rom coms, I didn’t find it particularly funny. I was worried I wouldn’t even want to finish it in the early chapters, but Josh surprised me as a hero (beginning with the paintball episode), and I think that’s what kept me invested in the story. He’s a bit of a fantasy hero with his fantastically perfect body and his tortured-but-sensitive personality, and he thought like a female rather than a male at times (what guy paints his bedroom the colour of a specific woman’s eyes?); nevertheless, he won my sympathy.
Overall, though, I’m ambivalent about this one, and the amount of language didn’t help. If I’m going to put up with that much language, I want there to be a bigger payoff.
