I can’t ignore that the author falls short in addressing systemic disadvantages and experiences of nonwhite, lower class, non-cis women. There were plenty of opportunities to share a perspective besides Martha’s, especially through “Doctor”, which was written vaguely and mysterious.. what’s more is there was plenty of opportunity for character flaws or growth because realistically Martha would not have been without prejudices. I also see why people felt the pacing was slow, I felt there could have been major edits, as there was a lot repetition, explanations that could have been left unsaid, some things that didn’t seem to have much of an impact (the fox). The climax felt wrong to me and a little over the top drama-wise. I appreciate that this is based on a real woman but I think it would have felt better to me to balance her character.
