Looking for Smoke by K.A. Cobell
dark
mysterious
tense
medium-paced
2.0
This book was way too long.
The thriller plot was okay, but the execution of it was drawn out. Ending multiple chapters for the last 100 pages with a cliffhanger got irritating after a while - just end the damn book already!
I think that since this is YA, I must acknowledge that this one is a good introduction to the issue of MMWI in indigenous communities and exposes readers who do not identify as indigenous to this problem. I did find that the overdone twists of the plot overshadowed the point of this novel (to shed light on MMWI for a young adult audience).
And I take issue with the diction and figurative language in this one. The metaphors were truly horrid at times, and the descriptions of the setting were hard to read like the syntax was just totally off. The diction to call women “smoke shows” in a tender moment between two teenagers was just a huge yuck for me.
Alas, I think the topic of this one is important, but the execution was very underwhelming. I’ve read many YA novels that felt more mature in content that also made sure to match the caliber of mature content with the caliber of writing. That did not happen in this one.
