The ending had a shocking twist that would have been memorable if the author hadn't backtracked.
SpoilerLet's kill our main character! Then let's put him back together. Gotcha though!
I also wanted Starkey to suffer much more than he did, but maybe I'm just a bad person.

Absolutely genius move from the author in order to not antagonize any of his readers: he doesn't actually take a stand in whether he is pro-life or pro-choice, and his readers can continue to see this story through their own biased lenses and use it to justify their arguments.

As a whole, very entertaining series, reminiscent of the style of Scott Westerfeld and Michael Grant, wherein the characters are very frustrating and get exactly what's coming for them, you just have to keep reading just a little longer. Very well played.

I must say that apparently, the more he writes, the worse Shusterman's style gets: his books from circa 2007 are very well done, with more recent ones (including this one) going off the rails: riddled with grammar mistakes, typos (Connor's name was spelled "Conner" in my edition multiple times), and the g*ddamn "for" used as a synonym for "because" that annoys me to no end.

Fully enjoyable plot and story that shouldn't be looked at in too much depth, but entertaining. I've already got my eyes on the companion/short stories collection next.
