I didn't like it.
I wanted to.

It was a novel that seemed to be poised to take on the limits of faith. But instead her characters were all over the top. Lacey and Lyle were able to coherently speak of their guilt and shame and faith in ways that completely belied the "man aren't white trash Christians dumb" tone of the rest of it.

Smart people join cults. Smart people stay in cults. Smart people fee guilt and shame and are coerced.

Stop pretending that blind faith is only for idiots. It's everyone who is susceptible to thinking that belonging is love and that that love isn't tied to specific behaviours and outcomes.

I promise. They will fucking drop you the minute you start to disappoint you and you will realize that jobs that say "We're like a family!" or social groups as thick as thieves are just waiting for you to show non conformity and you will be out on the street.

So no. I don't like this idea that cults are for brainwashed losers. They're for all of us. That's how they get us.
