I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It’s certainly very YA, and maybe a little higher fantasy than I’d normally be drawn to, but it was good. I appreciated how Deonn touched on themes that I haven’t encountered in YA (and even a lot of adult fiction). The Black experience is woven into this story that creates a really fresh perspective on fantasy and folklore. Many of the twists I saw coming but there was a few curveballs near the end that caught me off guard. Overall I enjoyed this book and will probably read the sequel.
P.S. I wasn’t expecting my Duolingo courses in Welsh to ever come in handy, but I was pleasantly surprised at my understanding of some of the language used in this book.
