I did not like this book as much as the rest of the series, and I think a lot of that has to do with not really liking
going back in time as a theme.

I also didn't really like being introduced to a few new characters, and they all have minor roles to play. Making it seem like they were just there for the plot to move on instead of adding to this overall world that got built. And on the topic of new characters, it was mentioned again, that godborns have something "wrong" with them that is related to their powers, but then never tell us what these issues the new characters have. They only explained Alana's. Like why is this a rule, if you aren't going to use it for most of your characters?

All the romantic relationships are also badly written. And not just for this volume, throughout the whole series, it is badly written.
Like with Zane and Brooks, the reason they were attracted to each other was because of a stupid kiss when they were in the past? First of all that is the stupidest reason I have heard for 2 characters getting together. And second, it never needed to be explained why they were attracted to each other, to begin with. You could have just left it at "love at first sight", but instead you went for an explanation? Or how about with Ms. Cab and Mr. O? They only got together and married, because Ms. Cab finally gave up after being constantly pestered by Mr. O. Yeah, that just screams good relationship.

But on the other hand, platonic relationships were written well. I loved Ren and Ah-Puch's relationship that they build. Even if we didn't get to see much of it in this book, I was always happy when they interacted. Zane and Hando's relationship, seemed to be even stronger in this book than in the others, just showing that they trust each other more and more as the series went on.
