We Are Unprepared by Meg Little Reilly
4.0
Ash and Pia are young professionals who made the move from Brooklyn to Vermont to live a quieter, simpler, more idyllic life. And just as they are starting to get to know the small town of Isole a bit, national news of The Storm arrives. A huge clash between a hurricane from the south and a Nor'Easter will collide over the entire Eastern US. As the months slowly tick by, the town and Ash and Pia divide into various factions on how to prepare for The Storm.
The story is told from Ash's perspective alone, which is an interesting choice. Pia is written as basically a manic pixie, but much of her preparatory work ends up saving their lives in The Storm.
This was a really interesting read as we are coming out of the pandemic in the US. A lot of the feelings during and after The Storm track those many of us had over this past year. The fear is destructive, but so is pitting neighbor against neighbor. A quibble about one of the final chapters that said the US economy took it's time to rebuild seemed like wishful thinking. If we know one thing from the pandemic, it is that the wealth/privilege/racial divides deepen in the recovery, not the other way around.
