cw: transphobia
This book was okay, if predictable. I was disappointed to learn however that Ernest Cline chose to include casual transphobia in his vision of the world in the year 2044. See page 173: "Now, spill it. Are you a woman? And by that I mean are you a human female who has never had a sex-change operation?" Also, I'd hoped there would be a triumphal moment where Aech, who had to pretend to be a straight white male to be successful would be able to actually reveal herself as a queer black woman to the world. Alas, there was no such catharsis. It kind of made it feel like that whole plot point was pointless.
