A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

4.0

4/5 stars - a fresh, exciting twist on Beauty and the Beast

Pinning down a rating for this book was a struggle. It was a very mixed bag, its successes (several of the characters, areas of the plot, some of the relationship development) weighed down by shortcomings (other characters, plot, and relationships). Do you see why I had trouble?

I'd like to come back to this review and break the problems and successes down more specifically, but for now, suffice it to say that while parts of the first two acts felt like they merited three stars, the third act was excellent! So...four stars, but it's complicated. I'll definitely pick up the sequel, so I suppose that speaks for itself.

I'd recommend A Curse So Dark and Lonely to fans of romantic fairy tale retellings. Readers who enjoy Marissa Meyer, Robin McKinley, and Rosamund Hodge are likely to enjoy it.
