The Teacher
by Freida McFadden
I liked this book. I've seen a lot of hate for this book[although it's highly rated here] and a lot of hate for The Co-worker. I think McFadden got really popular really fast, and this is mostly backlash. Her latest two releases didn't hit like some of her older books. It's like she matured. I miss the outlandish, jaw-dropping twists she was known for. Bring it back, Frieda! The crazy made her older books so fucking addictive.
Ok, so back to The Teacher. Frieda took a play, it seems, out of the Lucinda Berry handbook: Think of the darkest thing possible and write about it. This book deals with a child predator who is a teacher. There's two married teachers that the story focuses on. I won't reveal which spouse is the predator, but both of them are hiding secrets. One is just way more perverse than the other. I don't understand what people are so up in arms about. Lucinda explored this theme in Saving Noah. It is also reminiscent of My Dark Vanessa. All of this is heavy subject matter, but I didn't find fault with it in all three books. It is what it is. This sick shit happens. Maybe that's not what people disliked about this, I jumped right into my review and haven't read detailed reviews yet.
I found Eve's chapters most interesting. Addie's felt a bit boring to me at first. Things definitely get interesting with her later, though.
This book was entertaining. There weren't wild cliffhangers at the end of each chapter as I've come to expect from this author. The ending does go completely off the rails and I fucking like that shit. The epiloge was so fucking insane, but definitely epic. I had to laugh out loud at that. I think this book is a good time. If you love thrillers and Frieda read this. Check trigger warnings on this book though.
