I don't think I will ever be able to write a review that will do this book justice, and I have lost count of how many times I have devoured this novel. Every time I revisit this novel, I get something new out of it, and I adore Jane Austen for that. The writing is lovely and fully of witty banter, sarcasm, and humor. The characters are dynamic and stay with you for life.
Elizabeth Bennet is such a wonderful heroine. She doesn't care about societal expectations and refuses to marry for anything less than love and respect. In a time when women had little to no power or choice in the matter, this speaks volumes. I love how strong minded she is and how fiercely she protects and loves. Mr. Darcy is our socially awkward yet seemingly arrogant love interest. I absolutely adore him because he reflects and changes his behavior and views to be a better person without the expectation of having his feelings returned. The romance is a slow build and one worth savoring.
I adore that we get an exploration of social mores and the rollercoaster of family drama. We have characters with whom we can grow and love. This story is timeless and beautiful and perfect.
“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
“I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.”
“The distance is nothing when one has a motive.”
“Do not consider me now as an elegant female intending to plague you, but as a rational creature speaking the truth from her heart.”
