The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden

4.5

“Isabel had never known loneliness like that, one that arrived without the promise of leaving.”

“I am not meant for this place.”

“There isn’t a version of me that could have looked away from you.”

If you choose to pick this one up, I have two suggestions for you: (1) follow along on audio, because the two narrators were what really brought these characters and this story to life for me, and (2) do not read the synopsis, go into it blind.

I won’t say anything here that will ruin the book for you. All I’ll say is, if you’re looking for a book with a historical setting (just after the Second World War), that isn’t much about the war itself, but the long buried secrets and dark memories; or if you’re looking for a book with tension, queer desire, and longing, then this is the book for you.

Part III brought my rating from a 3.5 to a 4.5, I just really loved how it all tied up in the end, and found the way the story circled back to be clever. One of those stories that had hidden Easter eggs, and once you figured them out at the end, you wanted to start the book over with a new perspective.

Loved this booker prize shortlisted novel. Have you read it?
