This was an odd one, Rikus without most of the rest of the team from book 1 struggles to keep my attention.
I do like some of the friends that are gathered along the way, particularly the Thri-Kreen, however, they are all very similar in thoughts and style, since they are almost all gladiators.
There is a decent series of military engagements described in the book, but its bogged down by weirdly out of place arguments about Rikus's love life, which just seems weird in the middle of this mad dash across the desert.
Overall, it was ok, I don't think as good as book 1
