Blood of Elves
by Andrzej Sapkowski
Seems to be a solid start to something bigger.
There was one thing I absolutely loved in this book but it is slightly spoilery for previous books, so I'll mention it at the end after a warning.
The story is branching out and is no longer just about Geralt. It's getting quite complicated, there's lots of political interplay, kingdoms, factions, names and places. I'm torn because Peter Kenny might be the best narrator I've ever listened to but the book might be easier to follow in its written format.
It's interesting to see Sapkowski's style slowly evolve. Despite this book in the series being the first which is officially a full-length novel, it still sort of feels like a collection of chronological, closely related short stories.
MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE SWORD OF DESTINY (the previous book in the series): I think Ciri is possibly the best child protagonist I've seen in a book. This is because she actually feels like a real child. Yes, a brave, adventurous, scarred and intelligent child, but still a child. This is not the case in a lot of books. Watching her grow, question things, imitate adults and try to find her place in the world is funny, charming and believable. Undoubtedly the best part of the book.
