Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid

2.75

I WISH this was its own story - if fact, if it was, I would have given it more stars. Indeed, this is by no means a bad book. The writing, as usual for Ava Reid, has a mythical, folklorish atmosphere that is engaging and her imagery is beguiling. However, this being a reimagining of Macbeth just left me constantly baffled. In fact, reimagining feels the wrong word as so much deviated that this being marketed and presented as the Macbeth story was unsettling. The characterisation is so strange attached to these existing characters and I say that as someone who loved reading retellings and how different authors put spins on the same tales. This however just felt disappointing and a missed opportunity. As I said, I wish in some ways that this was an original take from Reid rather than ‘Macbeth’
