I adored every bit of space travel, feminist, 1980s that this story had to offer.
But

I truthfully don’t feel like the Frances, Barbara storyline was necessary. At all. And this could be my sensitive ‘mom of 2 young kids’ heart talking, but despite the beautiful prose and description of caring for a daughter, I didn’t want to read it. I wanted this to be a space story about a woman falling in love for the first time and becoming an astronaut despite all of the challenges of being a queer woman in the 1980s. And the story was that! I wanted it to only be that. But 2/3 of the way through it became a story about balancing family and work and love and then we barely got the excitement of the space story back in the last 20 pages.
What I loved about Carrie Soto was the full immersion into the tennis world. This was almost that, and all of the, albeit beautiful, bits with Frances were just heartbreaking and took away from the story.

As I said repeatedly while reading: it was a beautifully written book that I was having a miserable time reading.
