I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella
5.0

5 Stars

Once again, Sophie Kinsella delivers. Massively delivers. It’s incredible to me, that she has a formula for books, that somehow works each time and has yet to disappoint. We have a quirky and messy family. We have a relatable yet totally unique heroine, who can’t see what’s right in front of her. We have a charming and somehow incredibly decent love interest, who also has flaws. IT. JUST. WORKS.

This story is about Fixie (nickname, but I promise that it is somehow better than her actual name), a woman living in London with her mom and sister and works in their family-run kitchen supply store. She is always fixing issues with her friends and family (almost a disorder TBH), and stands by her late father’s motto of “family first!” She happens to save a stranger’s laptop in a cafe (our love interest, Seb) and he writes an IOU to her. Fixie’s childhood crush, Ryan, pops back into her life and needs a job and she thinks this will secure his affection, so she calls in her IOU with Seb to secure Ryan a job and place in her life. What follows is a series of IOUs back and forth between Fixie and Seb, mixed in with Fixie trying to navigate family loyalty and not being a doormat to those in her life.

It’s a heartwarming story of self discovery, what truly makes you happy and what it means to actually love someone (friends, family, significant other). This story really reminds me of The Family Stone, and makes a perfect holiday read (bummer that it comes out in February, as it builds up to Christmas at the end of the story). And, as with all Kinsella books, it ends with a happy ending that satisfies you in every plot line.

I always feel like my reviews of 5 star books are just megushing about how amazing the book is and I rarely have anything negative to say, almost making my review seem biased, but really, this book is so great and I cannot wait for everyone to read it.
