The Zebra-Striped Hearse by Ross Macdonald

4.0

A father hires Lew Archer to investigate the artist who’s after his daughter’s hand in marriage and her money. But, as you would expect, it’s not quite that simple. Each bit of information Archer uncovers reveals facets of the characters’ personalities - sometimes these facets are distortions and sometimes they’re accurate, so each revelation adds to the mystery.

I’ve been reading Golden Age detective stories, so this is a leap into a grittier reality with more psychological depth. It’s also my first foray into Lew Archer’s world. He’s a great companion - calm, dogged, unflinching, compassionate and realistic.
