Consort's Glory by Abigail Kelly

5.0

Oh. My. Glory.
I rarely read books without checking out the synopsis first or hearing about it from others, but all I knew going into this one was the title and series name (which hinted at nothing since I had no idea what the words “consort” and “protectorate” meant). But man, oh man. I would put this one firmly in my Top 3 of 2022.
I was hooked within the first few paragraphs, and instantly fell in love with Margot and her voice. And when the POV switched to Theodore, I was a goner. These two each have such great chemistry and a mutual understanding of the insecurities and challenges they’re facing. I was instantly rooting for them through everything.
Another aspect of this book that really impressed me was the world building, which can often be hit-or-miss. Rather than having the information dumped on us, the world building in this story is weaved into the characters’ thoughts, actions and conversations. I liked having the chance to put the pieces together as I read and see Margot and Theodore’s world come alive one page at a time. If you typically avoid fantasy because the world building is too much, this book would be a great intro into the genre. The setting is surprisingly modern and recognizable, yet filled with fascinating magic and fantastic beings like elves, witches, and shifters.
All in all, Consort’s Glory gave me a new OTP, characters to obsess over (hello, Kaz and Viktor?), and a glimpse into a world that Abigail Kelly has obviously only scratched the surface of. If you love fantasy romances as much as I do, this is a must-read.
