Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

BLAAAAAARG lol that's how I feel about this book.

TW: Death of a character, mentions of child abuse

Ok so... I was actually going to DNF this book around the 33% mark, because it was just... so boring and depressing to me at first. But, if anyone is reading this review and feels similarly, I would say keep reading, because I turned the page and things got interesting.

Mhairi McFarlane always knocks it out of the park with her ability to intertwine romance and wit, and usually, I love it — but in this book, I had a lot of trouble keeping up with the wit/humor. I think it's needed to balance out the heavier topics in the book, but, it was just such an effort to like. Pay attention. And I think readers are dropped in super abruptly to the friend group dynamic, which makes the beginning part even harder to stick with.

This book had so many twists and turns, and it kept me on my feet, even though frankly I thought Susie was kind of a shitty person lol. I also would DIE for Finlay Hart. My new book boyfriend.

I thought there was some technical issues... I don't think Susie and Fin's dad shouldve been on his own... and it sounded kind of like an easy plot fix for him to be "stable" and fine to live on his own after everything. I also think the ending was so rushed and not fair at ALL because readers are in this for a romance read and really it was romantic at the end for like 5 seconds.

Idk. I think... it was a funny read, but I wouldn't read it again, and it's probably my least favorite of her books. But honestly, only Mhairi McFarlane could tell this story the way it's told. There were some important lessons about life, death, and shattering the illusion of what we think people are like versus who they really are.
