Catherine’s new novel takes itself very seriously and rightfully so. I found her last book a bit flippant on its subject matter, and it struggled to find its feet and figure out what it was. But this is not the case here. This new novel knows what it is: ugly, knowing, and true. I can’t say I liked some parts of it, but I think that’s maybe the point. We’re witness here to a great writer learning her craft - it’s a wonderful sight.
