Weak Side
by S.J. Sylvis
I saw this book on BookTok (the hetero one, unfortunately) and wanted to check it out to see what the hype was about. Dialogue felt incomplete. At times the characters would seemingly be having two different conversations that didn't make sense, so readers are perhaps supposed to fill in the blanks? Like a character would ask a question requiring a long response and the response would just be a "yeah" and moving on, but not in a miscommunication trope way. It felt like sections of this book were edited at different points without thought to how the edits impact the overall story. The plot felt both rushed and slow. I couldn't really track what the point of the "conflict" was, because it was so superficial / unimportant to the overarching narrative. This book is also incredibly ableist and misogynistic. Women aren't morally wrong for having sex!! Also, there's a random date-rape comment that comes off as siding with rapists??? Like the whole point of the date-rape comment is to talk about how it was good that the hockey house doesn't exist anymore so that Theo can live on campus? And like... there's so much to be said about that.
ANYWAY! gay people, don't read this book lol
