I ate up this series but this book landed flat. The political aspects were so good. Mare’s struggle between right and wrong and her inner turmoil with what she wanted versus what was right lead to really good character development. With that said, I did frequently have to remind myself she was only 18 and this was a YA book. Lots of angst.
The battle scenes were epic. But the ending of this book was SOO anticlimactic. Killing Maven? It doesn’t need to be gorey to be good but there was a big empty hole left where a good ending could have been.
Cal asking if it’s too late? Amazing. He was tired of the crown. But then in the epilogue he blames Mare?! Wtf is that?
Also, I think our author wanted to give everyone a somewhat happy ending so she started to pair up Kilorn and Cameron. And there was no chemistry between them so it was an incredibly odd pairing. Not to mention, Cameron is 15!! It’s only a 3 year age gap but when he’s 18 and she harps on being so young - it doesn’t feel right. There were plenty of other “love interests” to choose from for Kilorn.
And screw Evangeline.
