None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
4.0
4 stars. wow wow wow, i am stunned by Lisa Jewell and expect to read more of her work soon. Alix and Josie are brilliant characters in their own right; i went into the book expecting to be divided among who i thought was more "justified" in their actions (cue my ignorant self going into this thinking Josie would be an innocent victim ...), only to find two beautifully written women who are drastically different but uniquely given the opportunity to shine in their own respective ways. the conflict and relationship that develops between the two is fascinating and alluring: Josie draws you in just like she does with Alix and keeps you hooked enough to feel offended on Alix's behalf as the climax of the book unfolds.
one star taken off because i really didn't know how to feel about the relationship between Walter and josie; the book redeems him a little too much imo given he was still an adult preying on a vulnerable child. regardless of how i feel about Josie and her actions towards Alix and Nathan (hint: not well), the apologetic way Walter is addressed and explained throughout the book, and given the space to be sympathised with without addressing the rightful concerns Alix has had about the age gap left me feeling very strange.
