WALKING INTO DREAMS by Steven Decker, Steven Decker
4.0
Very different kind of read for me. But it wasn’t a bad book. Far from it, actually. I was intrigued by the premise because I like reading about characters having dreams and especially how an author details dreams within a story. But this premise is one of those “all is not what it seems” kind of deals. I was very surprised because I was expecting something else but it still turned out to exceed my expectations.
The characters were well done although no one really stood out to me aside from the main character, Emily, but I didn’t dislike any of the other characters and that kind of bummed me out because I do like a cast of characters that yields a balance for me: love others while hating those that shake things up. Without that balance it left the story feeling way too vanilla for my taste.
But that’s not such a bad things always. The plot itself was very good, honestly. I felt more invested in the journey and the end game results for Emily which incited questions about certain things, mainly about dreams and how we may think of them and also about how sometimes our free will to decide our own destinies is challenged or even stolen. But I felt the overall message was one of hope and overcoming traumatic life obstacles. It was an inspiration tale, more or less. The main plot twist was very well done, obviously well thought out and planned.
The writing structure was straightforward and very light and clean, no hard core language or graphic details of any kind for anything, and things moved quickly due to the lack of (maybe?) not enough detail to certain events and/or situations, which was fine as it moved the story along. However, there were moments I felt the story dragged a little, plus there were a fair bit of grammatical errors throughout but, again, didn’t deter me from the story.
I’m rating this 4.5 stars. It is a great book and I highly recommend it.
