A Thousand Splendid Suns
by Khaled Hosseini
An interesting novel that talk about the life of two women and the difficulties they had to face in order to live an honorable life in a country like Afghanistan. The background theme seems to be the transition of lifestyles in Afghanistan from a simple beautiful one to a tragic one by the deeds of Talibans. It's wonderful how the The author managed to write about a lot of political issues and put them in a story of two young women.
The Mujahdeen gathered together and fought for the same goal which is to get the Soviets out of the country, but when they defeated their common enemy, they fought each other! "The mujahideen, armed to teeth but now lacking a common enemy, had found the enemy in each other". And this tragic situation gave birth to Taliban who destroyed education especially women's and promoted war.
The Novel talks prolongedly about women rights as "A society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated", and how those rights were achieved during Communist Regime "Women have always had it hard in this country, Laila, but they're probably more free now, under the communists, and have more rights than they've ever had before . It's true, it's a good time to be a woman in Afghanistan and you can take advantage of that".
Talking about the beauty of Kabul the author quotes from a national poet "One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls"
And when describing the tragic situation Kabul had been dragged to, he uses his own words showing the extreme sadness he feels ,"There would be bodies to step around in the morning. Some would be collected, others not. Then Kabul's dogs, who had developed a taste for human meat, would feast".
